The Montbello,
Parkfield and Green Valley Ranch community consists of a variety of cultures. Located on the edge of the metropolitan Denver
area, the community embraces 45% African American; 37% Hispanic; 12% Anglo and 6% other cultures according to the 2000 Denver
Census Data. However the
community is the only community within the city of Denver that has 44% of disadvantaged single parents under the age of 25
without a high school diploma. Our primary source of purchasing food is through the Food Bank of the Rockies. We
will continue to purchase food through this source because the value of money is over 7 times greater than at local groceries.
This will impact the amount of additional nutritional food boxes given to families in need. We will be able to meet the demand
of the recent elevation in participation and the forecasted need from the economy downturn during 2009. Families receive more
than just basic food; some of the items that are distributed monthly are household items such as laundry detergent, dish detergent,
and toiletries, as well as personal hygiene items. Typically the community food boxes contain fresh vegetables, eggs, and
non-perishable can goods each month.
